Cyber attacks are an ever-present danger to the IT infrastructure of Federal agencies. The SolarWinds hack in 2020 is one of the most notorious hacks in recent years. Not only did it affect SolarWinds itself, but if it had not been stopped, hackers could potentially gain access to the data and networks of SolarWinds’ customers and partners as well. This attack led to Federal Mandate M-21-31, which addresses:
- logging, log retention and management
- centralized access and visibility for the highest level SOCs
- requirements for sharing by Federal agencies to accelerate incident response
- more effective defense of Federal information
