Use Case: Data protection with syslog-ng™

syslog-ng can help to identify and anonymize Personal Identifiable Information (PII) data in your log feeds with the syslog-ng™ Pattern Database feature. This powerful capability compares the contents of the received log messages to predefined message patterns. By comparing the messages to the known patterns, syslog-ng™ is able to identify PII and classify the type of the event described in the log message.

As applications log more and more events about users, personal data is increasingly included in log messages. Here are few examples of logs with potentially sensitive data:

  • Internet search logs
  • Social media logins
  • Geolocation data of mobile subscribers
  • Credit card transaction logs
You can anonymize log data to protect users. When configured appropriately, you can also protect your entire company with individual accountability for user behavior.
